Cob ovens have been built of locally sourced materials in nearly every society & every climate around the world for thousands of years. The gathering of the materials is truly the most tedious part of the project. Once all the "ingredients" are in place an oven can be built in just a few hours! Under the direction of our dear friend, professional oven-builder & expert gardener Midge Short, we will be building our very own wood-burning cob oven just off the deck of the main cabin.
This oven will give us the option of using sticks & branches that used to get burned in brush piles as a valuable fuel source, enabling us to use less propane for our cooking. The oven stays hot for hours, so it's really practical to do some baking when you're done cooking your Cedar-Planked Salmon for dinner!
SUBSISTENCE FISHING ****To Be Announced****
Residents of the Kodiak Island Archipaelego have the right & privilege to put out a subsistence gill net for catching salmon, AND a "ground line" for catching halibut! Spend several days with us at Mystic Mountain & we will show you how to properly set your gear, how to safely pull fish from the net/line, & how to retrieve your gear & stow it so that it's ready to go next time you want to use it. We will review the governmental regulations relating to each of the gear/fishery types, so that you can maximize the opportunity to provide fresh, clean protein for your family in accordance with the relevant laws.
Your class will also include demonstrations on how to efficiently fillet your catch & several preservation techniques: vacuum-packing, canning, smoking, etc.

SALMON SCHOOL 101 ****July 9-September 10****
The F/V Woody will be participating in the Pink Salmon run in 2017, starting in early July & continuing till early September. If enough interest is expressed during the early/slow part of the run, we could schedule an event to train you to BE an Alaskan salmon fisherman!! Learn the ropes (Lesson #1, they're called LINES in nautical-speak!) about how to set & pull anchor, how to work the various deck positions, & what to expect from a life lived afloat. In addition to event costs, this adventure vacation will require attendees to purchase a state-issued commercial fishing license.
Buy your commercial fishing license here: https://www.adfg.alaska.gov/Store/
WEEK of WILD WOMEN ****August 3-10****
Tiffany Richards owns & operates the Back Rub Company in the Phoenix valley, offering corporate wellness programs & on-site massages. She is also a very experienced martial artist and has her own do-jo, the Peaceful Warrior. She came out to Mystic Mountain a number of years ago & had been wanting to return ever since! In 2016 she rallied a group of fearless women from the Phoenix area to follow her into the "Outback of Alaska" & they all had an amazing array of adventures!
I led the group on foraging hikes in the woods & along the coastline, showing our guests the wide variety of wild edible & medicinal plants in our area & also guided the ladies on several kayaking tours to visit a nearby bird rookery & hit some local beaches for some treasure hunting. I introduced the attendees to the joys & rewards of organic gardening & composting, with the goal of inspiring them to take steps to grow at least some of their own food upon their return home.
This year's events are even going to surpass all the fun we had last season, so be sure to contact us early to reserve space for you & your BFFs!

SALMON: CANNING & SMOKING
Salmon is my FAVORITE protein!! I could, & do, eat it for breakfast, lunch AND dinner. Salmon is so nutritious & so versatile that anyone with access to this wonderful meat source should have stores of salmon in various forms. Vacuum-packing & freezing is easy & great for when you plan ahead for thawing & cooking. When you want a quick & healthy snack, it is SO simple to open a home-canned pint of salmon & mix up a sandwich spread or cracker dip or whip up a delicious Salmon Quiche w/Whole Wheat & Cheddar & Almond Crust!
Don't be intimidated by pressure cookers any longer; together we will process several batches of jarred salmon, & each student will take home some finished product & numerous recipes on how to use it.
We will show you how to concoct your own spice rub which we will use to make a batch of hot-smoked salmon. We will also demonstrate the process of brining & cold-smoking. Because this procedure takes a minimum of one week, we will be unable to walk you through from start to finish, but you will go home with the knowledge & skills to make a batch at home!
The Emerald Isle offers us an amazing array of wild edibles. There are several types of mushrooms that I gather each fall. Allow me to introduce you to the delicious & nutritious Oyster mushrooms, pictured at left, & the "Chicken of the Woods" shown below. We will forage in the woods near our homestead, & then learn how to clean & cook these fabulous fungi!!
If you have thoughts about a class you'd like to take, or TEACH, please feel free to drop us a line at: Info@MysticMountain.org .
