There are quite a few game trails that spiderweb out through the forests of Sitka Spruce that form our backyard. If our guests so desire, I can incorporate a plant identification & wild food gathering lesson into the day's expedition.
Kayaking is one way to incorporate getting some exercise into an activity that is SO enjoyable you won't even realize that you're working out! Our boats are "recreational" kayaks, which means that they are overly broad & therefore extremely stable, perfect for first-timers. The bird rookery visible from our living room window makes a perfect destination for beginners, as it only takes about 20 minutes to paddle to. It is a thriving community of Herring Gulls, Kittiwakes, Tufted Puffins, & Black Oystercatchers, and hosts a sea otter nursery in the waters that surround it.
Each beach in our area has a unique character...tell me what you'd like to find & I will choose the beach that best suits your wishes. Whole tiny crabs? Madonna shells? Sand dollars?....Scouring the beaches for critters & treasures is educational & just downright fun! If you'd like, I can show you where the expression came from: "When the tide is out the table is set!" It's also fun to take the trinkets you've found & create something artistic that will always remind you of your visit to an Alaskan island! My artists' studio is a perfect place to work on your own "piece de resistance" over the course of your visit.
Whether we travel via kayak, or skiff, or on the F/V Woody, there's always plenty to see at sea!
Other than by boat, the only way to get to our homestead is by floatplane. This is a wonderful way to travel, giving passengers an amazing view of the "Emerald Isle." When you start making arrangements to visit us, call one of the local air taxi companies to arrange your travel to/from Mystic Mountain. I strongly advise you to also consider incorporating a bear-viewing/flightseeing trip into your transportation, as you will likely never have a better opportunity to see these magnificent beasts in such close proximity.
To customize the Eco-Adventure of your dreams, send us an email regarding what activities you'd like to include, the number of people in your group, & your desired dates. We'll get back to you just as efficiently as possible...but please be aware that we have NO internet or telephone service at the homestead, so do allow us adequate time to respond. We usually make trips to town to catch up on those things every other week or so, which is PLENTY of "civilization" for us! Join us for a trip of a lifetime at this amazing off-grid, self-sufficient homestead, & you just might NEVER want to leave!
