There's always a lot to do & not nearly enough hours in the day. (And in June we have as many as 21 hours of daylight, so that's saying a LOT!) Living in the bush can be very demanding & we've done it for long enough that I don't feel bad admitting that we're getting a little worn out! We like to open our home to folks who have the same values of sustainability that we do & can bring to the table superior work ethics & certain skill-sets beneficial to rounding out our little micro-community.
There are various levels of involvement...please see the options below, & then click this link if you want to apply for a position as a volunteer, intern, or potential future resident.
Our hands-on buddies are the BEST!! From the very first year that we hosted a Volunteer Week, we have been privileged to have met some of the GREATEST people, who thoroughly enjoyed throwing down some elbow grease on any one of a myriad of projects. Room & board (& an amazing off-grid lifestyle!) are provided in return for what can be long, physically & mentally demanding days. Only two long-term (5-6 month) Caretaker positions are available as garden/grounds managers each season, with couples preferred in order to better suit housing arrangements, & so the partners can keep each other company when I make occasional multi-day trips to town. Several shorter-term slots (1-month minimum) are available during peak planting/harvesting periods.
If you've always wished you were more environmentally aware & sustainability oriented, come on out & be my protégé for a couple months! I'll teach you what I've learned about living off-grid over the last eighteen years. You can learn about everything from growing your own food & how to preserve it to building safe & sturdy structures & alternative energy. Each program will be customized for the student, based on how long they can stay & what skills they'd like to master. I will only take on one student per season!
In all honesty, I always learn something from my interns, too! The fact that they are studying relevant topics like Sustainable Agriculture or Alternative Energy means they are passionate about preserving this planet & will have tons of energy/enthusiasm to add to the mix!
After nearly forty years of living & working on this land, Stan has earned the right to SUPERVISE the ongoing projects!
If you actually think you have what it takes to live in the wilderness, for REAL, you may apply for the opportunity to "audition" for permanent residency in our new eco-village. Prior to being selected, you will have to provide a resume & references that document your ability to contribute needed skills/knowledge AND your viability as a financially responsible partner in supporting this intentional community. You will be expected to spend one full season (May - October) living/working on the homestead, largely self-directed, and prove yourself to be consistently highly productive and conscientious, with a commitment to sustainability & the preservation of this amazing island/planet.
Areas of expertise yet to be filled:
Master Gardener or Permaculturist
Mechanic--maintain diesel generator, truck, small engine equipment, outboards
When you have spent a full audition period (spring thru fall) participating in important developments on the property, & have demonstrated consistent behavior & contributions related to its well-being & efficient functioning, you may be offered the opportunity to "buy-in" as a permanent resident in our eco-village. This would allow you certain privileges such as permission to fund the building of your own cabin on an agreed-upon site OR purchase one of the two cabins that are already turn-key, listed below. All fishing gear & fish-packing equipment, kayaks & gear, banya, dining hall & [eventual] outdoor kitchen, etc. are yours to use throughout the year, whether we are present or not.
"Halibut Hole" overlooks the beach, with a full-length covered deck for enjoying the stunning view. The cozy downstairs apartment has a bedroom area with a double bed & desk, and a kitchen (with double compartment stainless sink, apartment-sized fridge & a full-sized propane stove/oven) & dining area that includes a woodstove. Accessed from a private entry on the back side of the building are two upstairs bedrooms, one with two twin beds & the other with one twin & one double bed. This 14'X24' two-story cabin is move-in ready & can house up to seven people.
The "Eagle's Nest" is an adorable little two-story cabin perched on the bluff alongside the Community Hall. Downstairs is a comfy living area with table & chairs, futon-style couch, propane heat & a small bathroom with running water to the sink [cold-only at this point] & an actual flush toilet! A small deck offers room to kick back & take in the spectacular scenery of Dry Spruce Bay & Kupreanoff Straits. Upstairs are four twin beds, for a total housing capacity of six people on the two levels of this 12'X20' cabin.
NOTE: We are still in the process of establishing the membership contracts & are open to input regarding creating an appealing package that works for all parties involved. New members may play an important role in forming the governing guidelines.
